I was in the same situation as you for the past few years until the end of last
year. I always had a generic short haircut and flirted with the idea of
growing it out.

If you think about it too much, you'll never grow it out. Just do it, and deal
with the longer hair later. For a long time, I wanted to grow mine out but
wondered about intermediate haircuts, transition haircuts, asking my
hairstylists for reassurance, advice, etc. Then I realized that they really
only cared for the status quo, wanting to give me a haircut that day, that
moment.

The vision for long hair had to come from me, even if I had no firm idea of the
final style.

So one day, I said f* it. I'm not getting my hair cut again for the next X
months. X turned out to be over nine months, when my hair needed layering and
shortening in the back.

It's still growing out, and I'm never going back to the generic short hair.

So just do it, and adjust as you go along.

BTW, if you can get access to "hair software," you could digitally check your
face out with different hairstyles.
