I prefer canned openers for the very beginning because I can deliver them
almost unconsciously i.e. I know exactly what to say even when I am drunk,tired
or totally absent minded. For instance, when I suddenly see a woman in the mall
I am glad to have one or two automatic lines to begin with. I cannot instantly
think of something individual about her THAT IS NOT OBVIOUS to the rest of the
guys who are hitting on her. If I would try my mind would go blank or panic
("does this sound cheesy?").
I think it is very and even more powerful to appreciate something about her
AFTER a couple of minutes talking. For me it is easier and it sounds more
genuine.
