I dunno. I get your point -- that chicks perceive themselves somehow
"going upwards" merely by rejecting / dissing on guys. But they'd only
actually achieve that (and certainly only perceive that they would
achieve it), if and when there is a group among whom they can climb the
ladder.

In other words, they only could benefit if they're doing the rejecting
for onlookers. But my understanding is, chicks just "act mean" FOR THE
FUN OF IT.

Not that I'm whining -- back in the days of my childhood, when I needed
chicks' approval, indeed I would have whined about this. But now, I'm
just trying to figure out the "mind set" that could lead to such odd
behavior.

Imagine. You're a general. You're Ghengis Khan. Everyone bows before
you. You walk across the camp, and see a man who seems to wish to please
you. He toadies a little bit, by cleaning your boots or polishing the
leather on your saddle. So you ask him to come on over, and play a
little bit of a "hint" game in which you imply that he might get
promoted from lowly stable-shoveler up to mighty horseback-archer of the
Apocalyptic Horde. And when he comes over and does exactly what you say,
you decapitate him. Right? Make sense?

Hmm, no. You might find him smarmy, and therefore avoid him. Or you
might find him pathetic, and therefore set up some kind of system by
which his sort is weeded out, or at least encouraged to improve. You
certainly wouldn't hint that he should continue to clean your damn
saddle, and you most likely wouldn't show your weakness by being so
fearful of him that you chop his head off. Ghengis (and anyone else who
is genuinely lording it over their minions through power) only
decapitates legitimate threats, right?
