Me either... I can't really reply to the 2nd part of the question, being
white - I have, however, had the same & similar related things said to me by
Black etc girls.

...and it was similar to the above why I've heard that comment off other
girls - mainly because people usually latch onto the 1st thing they can and
depending on what info they have available to them and their previous
experiences. In other words had you chatted enough for her to have known
anything else about you?

Yeah, you probably wouldn't have thought twice about busting out the C&P on
her had she said "cute, for a systems developer, that's a good thing tho" or
would you?
Most people don't have much experience of the I.T. world and assume most are
geeks. If you work in I.T. and see it from the inside daily you'll be aware
of more subtle generalisations, distinctions and stereotypes... and if you
hang out with them you'll realise they're all just people and either decent
or an arsehole irrespective of their job, race and so on... (although if
you can compile your own kernel & prefer CLIs you probably are a geek =op )

To me, barring any other things or beliefs she may have had - I'd assume her
thoughts were more along the lines of "out of all the black guys I've come
across this is a rare one I find attractive" although I'd still have likely
*playfully* accused her of being racist and carried on from there... You'll
very, very rarely change someones mind instantaneously in those situations
although if you get it 'wrong' you can certainly reinforce every
preconception they may or may not have.
