This is so similar to training to become a classical composer, in that to
acquire the skill set of a master you must learn each skill individually, even
if it means hindering your current pickups/composition. Exercise after exercise
of unmusical strict counterpoint or coral harmonization eventually lead to the
ability to fully harness your natural creativity. I guess you have to learn the
rules to know when to break the rules.
