SweetP has the word here.

In a dance environment, asking someone to dance is not opening. So open
first. Start talking.

Easier said than done in one of those environments, but it's key.

Then /maybe\ ask them to dance - but not because the conversation gets awkward.
If it's awkward, then walk away or persist just like you would in a club.
